Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve at Six Senses Samui

THE FESTIVITIES START with a morning stretch at Six Senses Spa followed by meeting Santa at the resort’s library, a face acupressure at the spa, festive specials, a mulled wine master class and Tipsy Tea at Drift at the beach.

Christmas Dinner features Chef Mauricio’s Specials at Dining on the Hill.

New Year’s Eve festivities start with a bespoke gourmet dinner with Chef Nirutwill, where you can watch your meal being pprepared. It includes a tapas counter, a main course Tom Yam Takay in a Bag – rock lobster, scallop, green lip mussel, tiger prawn  and salmon. There’s also the chef’s Bucket List that features beef nrochettes, crispy bacon, lamb cutlet, bamboo rice, purple corn, zucchini, nam jim jaew, mole, pineapple chilli jam.  It ends with dessert – Chocolate Textures of brandy rice or mango compote.

There’s also a vegetarian version that also includes a tapas counter with a main course: Pad Hed Gub Haew Sauce Tua that features stirred fried mushroom and chestnut with black bean sauce; Phak Boong Sauce Panang  Fak-Thong Bod – mashed pumpkin with crispy tufu, morning glory and panang sauce; and Kao Kluk-Kamin Gub Kaio-Wan Phak – green curry with vegetables and turmeric rice. It also ends with dessert.

Dining on the Rocks with Chef Mauricio also offers a five course dinner, starting with Calamari Carbonara, Oyster and Apple and Lamb Duo that also includes miso eggplant and pickled onion. There are two options for dessert – Raspberry Praline Tart or its Dragon Fruit Surprise.

Dining on the Rocks also offers a vegetarian menu that starts with cucumber and apple, followed by eggplant and lentils and zucchini lasagna as well as desserts.

After dinner, Drift in the Beach that includes a welcome tiki, tapas bites, DJ music and a midnight toast to the new year.

CHRISTMAS AND NEW YEAR’S FESTIVITIES start early at Soneva Kiri in Thailand with breakfast on Christmas Eve.

You’ll have a choice either in the resort’s The View dining room or at Soneva’s Organic Garden.

After breakfast you’ll have a number of activity choices, starting with a Benz Cook Class at the Benz Restaurant with Soneva’s chef. It starts with a visit to Ao Salat market to choose fresh seafood and other ingredients for your cooking class, where you’ll be able to create your own lunch.

There’s also a Yoga class to learn basic positions and relaxation techniques, and a wide range of activities to choose from – learning the local art of making home-made coconut at Six Senses Spa; or drive 8 km through dense jungle to Klong Nam Sai to see rattan, bamboo and rubber trees, and Koh Hood’s secret waterfall; or visit Ao Salat fishing village on the northeast tip of Koh Hood, where the island’s fish and seafood is transported and sold; or drive south past small villages and end up at a beautiful beach.

For lunch, there’s lunch at a mushroom cave, where you can pick mushrooms for s five-course meal. There’s also lunch at the resort’s Organic Garden that serves up fresh vegetables, salads and seafood caught that morning.

A third option is lunch at North Beach for pit-cooked seafood and fish along with New World wines.

In the afternoon, there’s a class in mixing drinks, where you can create your special cocktail, or an unforgettable food journey through the Organic Garden.

On Christmas Eve and Christmas you can choose either to dine at The View or Benz dining rooms.

There’s also an extensive menu New year’s Eve and on New Year’s day.

Other activities include snorkeling at Koh Rang; more cooking classes at the Chef’s Table and the Hut Kitchen; and an Indian Pop Up on the Lunar Deck for an evening of spices, taste and life.

Dusit International reimagines its marketing strategy for the new normal, introduces three new pillars for sustainable business

RECOZNIZING THE DEEP and profound impact that the global pandemic has had on Thailand’s tourism and travel industry, the new strategy will see the company establish new partnerships to co-create value beyond its current scope and reach; cultivate greater synergies between its various business units; and create new meaningful guest experiences that contribute to the preservation of the environment, culture, and local communities in its various destinations.

As part of the strategy, Dusit has partnered with Local Alike, an online social enterprise dedicated to the sustainable development of Thai rural communities through responsible tourism, to offer a range of educational tours aimed at young families seeking more meaningful experiences during their stays.

Immersing participants in the lives, culture and cuisines of indigenous communities around Thailand, such as the Tai Lue hill tribe in Chiang Mai and lobster farming communities in Phuket, these experiences are offered under the banner of Dusit Local Explorer.

Anantara Chiang Mai Resort introduces the Thai Massage Guru

A BUCKET LIST EXPERIENCE for anyone visiting Thailand, travellers consider a trip to the Kingdom of Thailand complete with the deep stretching and kneading experience of a Thai massage.

Based at Anantara Chiang Mai Resort, Panissara Chaokhelang, better known as Noot, boasts almost 20 years as a Thai Massage therapist and as the dedicated Thai Massage Guru, a treatment with her is a must when in Northern Thailand.

Known locally as Nuad Thai, the acupressure technique of the Thai massage is a time-honoured tradition that has been passed down through generations for thousands of years, and its roots can be traced back to origins of self-care in Thai village society.

Children in rural households across Thailand are taught how to ease the aching muscles of their parents and grandparents. While the children might not understand the theory behind it, they learn how to pull and push limbs and step on the back to soothe the muscles of their hardworking relatives.

This was true for Noot and growing up in rural Thailand, where there were no trained or licensed massage therapists in her village, her mother would ask her to walk on her sore back and aching legs after a long day working at the market.

Noot explains: “I was taught how to massage before I was even 10 years old. As I got older, I wanted to learn about proper techniques and acupressure points so I could better address specific body concerns through massage.”

She pursued physiotherapy at university in Chiang Mai and went on to study massage at Chivasom Academy in Bangkok, before returning to Chiang Mai where she specialized in Lanna-style Thai massage. Rather than finding work as a physiotherapist in a hospital as many of her classmates did, Noot opted for the more serene spa environment.

While western medicine ascribes to quick fixes, Noot believes massage treats the root cause of physical ailments such as back pain or even headaches. She educates her guests so they can better understand their aches and ailments.

She added: “Before starting the massage, we talk so I can learn about their concerns, habits and day-to-day activities to better understand what their issues may be. I recommend activities so they can extend the benefits of their massage and treat themselves from home instead of reaching for a pain killer next time they have a niggle in their back.”

In addition to Thai massage duties, Noot is also the designated trainer for Anantara Spa and is responsible for making sure that all therapists in more than 40 spas across Asia, the Indian Ocean, the Middle East, Africa, South America and Europe adhere to the standards of this award-winning spa brand.

The Thai massage technique dates back 2,500 years and its popularity has since gone global, so much so that the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) designated traditional Thai massage as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity, voting to include it on the organizations World Heritage list in December 2019.

UNESCO made the decision to include traditional Thai massage on the World Heritage list in December 2019 at the 14th session of its Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, held in Bogota, Colombia from December 9 to 14. Public Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul welcomed the announcement as an achievement for the Thai people and the Kingdom.

DUSIT INTERNATIONAL, ONE OF THAILAND’S HAS TEAMED UP with innovative Bangkok-based event management company Pixel One Production Co., Ltd, which specializes in audio-visual production solutions for MICE business – to deliver new services for virtual and hybrid meetings at Dusit Hotels and Resorts throughout Thailand.

The new services, collectively dubbed VICE ROOM (Virtual Interactive Conference Experience), see Dusit’s hotel meeting rooms transformed on demand into high-end recording, live-streaming and presentation studios for worldwide broadcasting.

A multi-screen video wall allows for real-time interactions with remote event participants, while a green screen backdrop can be incorporated for high-definition virtual backgrounds. Dedicated professional event specialists are also on hand to ensure swift and seamless connectivity.

Six Senses joins Global Tourism Plastics Initiative to become plastic free by 2022  

SIX SENSES HOTELS RESORTS SPAS  HAS become one of the first signatories of the Global Tourism Plastics Initiative, led by the UN Environment Program and UN World Tourism Organization, in collaboration with the Ellen MacArthur Foundation.

Environmental and social responsibility is at the heart of the Six Senses. In a shared world of limited natural resources and fragile ecosystems, sustainability isn’t a choice, it is the only choice.

It demands doing what is right rather than what is easy.

At Six Senses, this means going beyond banning single-use plastic and unnecessary waste and to be free of all plastics by the year 2022. This strategy is based on the life cycle assessment of plastics and understanding the impact these products have on the environment from fossil fuel extraction through to disposal.

It’s an approach that focuses on upstream suppliers, seeking innovative solutions and promoting a de-plasticized lifestyle by providing more sustainable alternatives.

Joining the Global Tourism Plastics Initiative is another step in this direction to address the root causes of plastic pollution. It enables businesses and governments to take concerted action and lead by example.

As a signatory of the Global Tourism Plastics Initiative, Six Senses furthers its commitment to eliminating, innovating and circulating its use of plastics by 2025, although the brand is on its way to being Plastic Free in 2022.

• Introducing more reusable solutions in kitchens to replace unnecessary plastic packaging (cling film and plastic packaging of fresh products) by 2022.

• Sourcing naturally compostable packing and other materials where appropriate.
• Working with suppliers to avoid plastic packaging, source plastic free alternative products, and arrange packaging take-back programs wherever possible.
• Working with other hotels and industry partners to share best practices, supplier recommendations, and other information to help the industry move away from plastic.
• Sorting all waste materials, upcycling or composting when possible on site, sending to offsite recycling where available – all with the aim of zero waste to landfill.

Called ‘Listen to the Earth in Silence’ – the exclusive event was held  at Dusit Thani Hua Hin resort and was attended by travel industry specialists and high-ranking diplomats.

The program focused on low-impact, eco-friendly travel methods, community-focused activities, wellness-focused cuisine, and innovative solutions for events and functions which Dusit, the TAT and TCEB believes will be central to facilitating and encouraging responsible MICE travel in a post COVID-19 world.

In line with TCEB’s basic guidelines for sustainable events in the new normal, which includes, amongst others, the promotion of public transportation, local attractions, and locally sourced organic foods, the event began with a “carbon-saving” private train journey from Bangkok, which also featured a healthy lunch expertly catered for by Dusit Events.

Upon arrival in Hua Hin, participants visited a local marine centre, where they helped to release baby crabs to the wild. Staying at Dusit Thani Hua Hin, they learned about Dusit’s hybrid meeting models that facilitate small and safe gatherings while simultaneously leveraging technology for secure, reliable and instant global reach.

The demonstration included a meeting room equipped as a high-end recording, live-streaming and presentation studio with the latest audio-visual equipment for worldwide broadcasting.

This included a multi-screen set up which allows for real-time interactions with remote event participants; a green screen backdrop for high-definition virtual backgrounds; and dedicated professional event specialists who are on hand to ensure swift and seamless connectivity.

Similar virtual meeting solutions will be rolled out at other Dusit properties in Thailand, and will also be available for offsite functions catered for by Dusit Events.

Highlighting Dusit’s thoughtful, holistic and technology-focused approach to events, the event also featured a live-yet-silent beachside concert hosted by Sounds of Earth.

Featuring music specially composed to raise awareness of the environment – both lyrically and sonically – the live performance was beamed to the audience via wireless headsets, allowing them to soak up the atmosphere and enjoy a shared experience amongst nature without any noise pollution. Guests also enjoyed an exclusive dinner featuring healthy ingredients from Dusit Thani Hua Hin’s own organic gardens.

“Arranged in line with our MICE Venue Hygiene Guidelines, the creative solutions presented at the Listen to the Earth in Silence event fully demonstrated how hotels can bring together crowds without compromising safety and well-being.

“We were also happy to see that, except teambuilding, the event also demonstrated six of the seven ‘Thailand 7 MICE Magnificent Themes’ we have identified for outstanding MICE products and events in the new normal – namely fascinating history and culture, exhilarating adventures, CSR activities, beach bliss, lavish luxury, and culinary journeys. By inviting ambassadors and leading industry specialists to experience this event first hand, we have demonstrated how Thailand is ready to welcome international visitors as soon as the situation allows. Sustainable, meaningful experiences like this will remain at the very top of our agenda.”

Dusit’s innovative MICE models fully embrace TCEB’s guidelines for sustainable events to ensure all processes are as environmentally friendly as possible. All Dusit Hotels and Resorts in Thailand have also been certified for Thailand MICE Venue Standard (TMVS) by TCEB.

Groupwide, Dusit has also rolled out several new services designed to offer extra convenience, experience and value across all aspects of the guest and customer journey.
