Restore with body balancing therapies

The menu invites guests to plant their feet firmly on the Earth with a grounding collection of body-balancing treatments. “Restore stabilizing energy, while Mother Earth’s abundant gifts heal you on all levels. Recall the cyclical importance of rest and rejuvenation in order to grow and thrive,” says Gemma about the Physical Well-being menu.

For complete physical relaxation, she recommends the Samuprai Massage – A powerful Thai-style massage using hot poultices of lemongrass, prai, turmeric and makrut lime peel to invigorate muscles. “This combination of ingredients soothes the muscles, leaving you in complete relaxation.” she said.

Connect to the holistic heart of Northern Thailand

Using a combination of local ingredients and ancestral knowledge, the spa’s Social Well-being menu inspires personal and cultural connection.

“These therapies allow you to shift your focus from where you’ve been to where you are right now… to rediscover the sense of balance that comes from feeling part of a greater whole,” she said.. M

Making a strong connection to Northern Thailand, Chiang Mai’s Princess Ritual is inspired by their very own Princess Dara Rasami, born in nearby Mae Rim village. “This ritual combines an exfoliating blend of seven sacred flowers with the soothing properties of Princess Dara Rasami’s Rose – grown exclusively for Four Seasons Resort Chiang Mai, a firming, anti-ageing massage with mangosteen and locally grown vetiver and orange blossom,” she shares.

A true reflection of the “Land of Smiles”, the Emotional Well-being menu focuses on self-care, and invites guests to reconnect with the peace and poise that comes from the feeling of oneness.

“Our therapies uplift the centres of emotion and floods the body and mind with kindness,” said Gemma.. For a true journey of emotional discovery, the Connected Heart Ritual is a tender healing sequence to restore inner equilibrium and awaken to the riches of compassion, generosity and well-being. The therapy releases toxins with a Himalayan salt and poppy seed scrub, while drawing guests to submit to serenity with a rose and tuberose bath. “Reconnect with your inner stillness with a massage and heart-work using rose oil and rose quartz,” she adds.

The Nutritive Well-being menu inspires guests to take the time to revitalize and restore their inner well of healing, with nutrient-rich treatments that restore from the outside in.

“Nourish the body with the Food for the Soul Ritual, focused on flooding the body with vital energy and nature’s healing powers,” shares Gemma. Focusing on the physical and intuitive elements of the gut, an energizing and detoxify-ing scrub, wrap and massage stimulates the lymphatic and circulatory systems for enhanced inner and outer health. “Your spirits will feel lifted and your body recharged.”

Dusit introduces new ‘Dusit Care – Stay with Confidence’ program

DUSIT INTERNATIONAL HAS RESPONDED to the challenges brought by the COVID-19 pandemic by introducing ‘Dusit Care – Stay with Confidence’– a new program of services designed to go beyond enhanced hygiene protocols to deliver additional convenience, experience and value while ensuring guests always feel safe and reassured.

The program, being rolled out at Dusit Hotels & Resorts worldwide, includes the introduction of new facilities, services and operating procedures across five distinct dimensions: 1. Flexible Stays 2. Safety & Well-being 3. Local Experience 4. Technology, and 5. Dusit Care Kits. 

To limit queues and offer added convenience for guests, Flexible Stays covers, among others, check-in and breakfast. All Dusit Hotels & Resorts will offer flexible check-in times, while breakfast will be available at any time of the day.

Safety & Well-being will see each Dusit property enhance its already stringent health and safety practices, which includes frequent sanitization of all rooms and public areas, to include temperature scans on arrival, provision of appropriate space in restaurants, and more measures designed to protect the health and safety of guests, customers and employees.

To promote personal well-being, Dusit’s in-room dining options have been enhanced to include personalized healthy food, while refreshment fridges will offer healthy drinks and snacks which guests can enjoy for free. May 16 1763

HE WAS KNOWN as Dictionary Johnson, creator of the first English dictionary, under some very difficult circumstances. Before then, he eked out a living as a journalist, sometimes making up the speeches that were supposedly given in Parliament.

There is one memorable scene before he became famous:

Evening. May 16, 1763. James Boswell, an impressionable 22-year-old from Scotland, is about to meet Dr. Samuel Johnson for the first time. Boswell had tried to meet Johnson a number of times but something always went wrong at the last minute. Then, quite unexpectedly, while he was having tea with Mr. Davies, the bookseller and sometime actor, Johnson suddenly made an appearance.

By this time, Boswell, who liked to hobnob with the talented and famous, was highly agitated and nervous, wanting to insinuate himself to Johnson, yet frightened of saying the wrong thing.

Here’s how he remembered it in his biography of Johnson:

Mr. Thomas Davies, the actor, who then kept a bookseller’s shop in Russel Street, Covent Garden, told me that Johnson was very much his friend, and came frequently to his house, where he more than once invited me to meet him; but by some unlucky accident or another he was prevented from coming to us.At last, on Monday the 16th of May, when I was sitting in Mr. Davies’s back parlour, after having drunk tea with him and Mrs. Davies, Johnson unexpectedly came into the shop; and Mr. Davies having perceived him through the glass door in the room in which we were sitting, advancing towards us — he announced his awful approach to me, in somewhat the manner of an actor in the part of Horatio, when he addresses Hamlet on the appearance of his father’s ghost, “Look my Lord, it comes.” I found that I had a very perfect idea of Johnson’s figure from the portrait of him painted by Sir Joshua Reynolds soon after he had published his Dictionary, in the attitude of him sitting in his easy chair in deep meditation, which was the first picture his friend did for him, which Sir Joshua very kindly presented to me …

This passage still resonates, even after 257 years, as does this memorable account of Johnson’s meeting with David Garrick, a famous actor of the day and a former pupil from Johnson’s teaching days. They are standing backstage in Garrick’s theatre and Garrick had just asked Johnson how he liked it.

“I’ll come no more behind your scenes,” said Johnson, ”for the silk stockings and white bosoms of your actresses excite my amorous propensities.”

A Beginner’s Guide to DIY Hydroponics with Avani Hotels

THERE IS NO BETTER TIME to grow your own fresh vegetables and microgreens than now, while staying at home.

Avani Pattaya Resort in Thailand is sharing their years of expertise in hydroponic farming with “do-it-yourself” home farming tips.

One of the advantages of growing your own produce is that you know exactly where your greens come from. It also guarantees freshness and reduces the carbon footprint by not having to transport the greens. With hydroponics, you have the added benefits of using less water and eschewing pesticides.

Hydroponically farmed vegetables also tend to be healthier, as they are less susceptible to diseases and insect pests, as well as giving a higher yield and thus saving you money.

Before you start

Through trial and error, the team at Avani Pattaya Resort found that the best plants to grow in a hydroponic system are Chinese kale, Swiss chard, lettuce, rocket and microgreens.

Consider repurposing everyday items before purchasing a dedicated hydroponics kit and order the rest online. You will need:

  • Individual containers. These can be wet tissue boxes that are made of plastic, coffee cans or jars, plastic water bottles or other reusable containers. Alternatively, you can make your own container by stacking two coffee cups together.
  • Net cups (optional).
  • A plastic or metal tray.
  • A sheet of rockwool or sponge foam, with pre-cut slots for the seeds.
  • Nutrient solution, which is the most important part. There are some ready-made solutions that can be purchased online.

Getting started

  • Begin by placing a sheet of foam on a tray and soaking it with water. Once wet, place the seeds into the slots.
  • Transfer the seeded foam into a transparent container. Put a clear see-through lid on the container and put it out in the sun. This will create a greenhouse-like effect, helping to capture the moisture.
  • It will take between one and two weeks before you see the first shoots.
  • After two weeks it’s time to move the seedlings into separate containers filled with nutrient solution. If you are using net cups as containers, don’t fill them up too much. If you’re using two coffee cups stacked together as a container, make sure to make holes in them.
  • Cut the foam around the seedlings and move the plants into individual containers filled with nutrient solution.
  • Ensure that the plant has sufficient light, and for best results consider LED grow lights.
  • Check the roots every now and then, to ensure they are clean and clear of algae.
  • It will take approximately five to six weeks for the plants to be fully grown.
  • Once the plants are ready, harvest the leaves. You should be able to harvest each plant several times.

Growing tips

  • Choose the right plant cultivars for the scale of space that you have.
  • If you’re not ready for plants that require special attention, stick to the basic types of herbs/plants that can be grown very easily, such as: basil, celery, chives, coriander, dill, mint, parsley, rosemary and thyme.
  • Be as observant as possible when you’re growing seeds for the first time without any soil. Things to look out for are: the period needed for full sprouting, the appearance of seeds as they sprout, and the physical appearance of seeds as they germinate.
  • Plants need lighting at least six hours a day to grow well, but also avoid strong sunlight.
  • Pay extra attention to watering them during seeding, keep the sponge soaked.
  • Note growth phases of individual plants at specific weeks, so you will have a handy reference for next time.
  • Do not wait more than 42 days to harvest, as they will begin to taste bitter after that.

IN PREPARATION TO WELCOME travellers back to its hotels, resorts and serviced apartments across the Asia-Pacific and to reassure guests who are currently in residence, ONYX Hospitality Group has enhanced operational hygiene and safety standards as part of a new “ONYX Clean” initiative that will be implemented across its full portfolio that includes brands and properties such as Amari, OZO, Shama and Oriental Residence Bangkok.

“ONYX Clean” will impact every step of the guest journey from arrival to departure, with updated standards and operational procedures that complement the Group’s existing industry-leading health and safety initiatives.

ONYX Clean” will be introduced across all of the company’s 52 properties across seven countries in the coming weeks, and at all new openings. All properties with temporary suspended operations will reopen with full “ONYX Clean” implementation, as team members take this unprecedented opportunity to prepare, train and fine tune procedures for the return of the first guests.

ONYX team members were continuously engaged while staying home participating in an online learning platform that offers a wide variety of training programs, including in-house produced educational videos that delivered awareness on pathogen risks and demonstrate the enhanced cleaning and sanitizing methodologies and updated guest service protocols.

Each property has appointed an in-house “ONYX Clean” champion who will ensure the implementation and internal audit of all standards based on a property-wide checklist developed in partnership with Ecolab, a global leader in hygiene, safety and energy technology solutions and supplier of many cleaning products used by ONYX Hospitality Group properties.

“With the impact of COVID-19 leading to new norms and heightened consumer interest in hygiene and safety, we would like to assure all travellers – both new and returning – that we have their safety and well-being as our number one priority. Every property will adhere to an updated and consistent list of housekeeping, maintenance and service delivery protocols.

“Given the importance of safety, our portfolio size and the pace at which we collaborate, we will prioritise and implement all these revised measures within a matter of weeks,” he added

The revised standards of the “ONYX Clean” initiative take into consideration every step of the stay journey that is visible to guests, as well as the ‘unseen’ heart-of-house areas such as team member dining and locker rooms, receiving bay, food and supplies storage, and kitchens.

Highlights include:

Welcome and arrival – Compulsory temperature readings, hand sanitization, observation of potential symptoms for all guests and patrons. Every arriving residential guest will be requested to complete an ONYX health and travel questionnaire. Physical distancing will be implemented in the event of queues or waiting and all keys and pens used to complete the check-in procedure will be sanitized.

 Guest rooms and suites – A room seal will be placed on every guest room door to indicate to arriving guests that their personal space has not been tampered with since being thoroughly cleaned and disinfected. Housekeeping team members will service all guest rooms and suites with hotel-issued masks and gloves, with a list of high-touch surfaces such as door handles, TV remotes, room controls and faucets being wiped down with approved sanitizers and further sterilized by UV-C wands.

 Public Areas – Hourly sanitization of high-traffic and common-touch areas including door handles and lift buttons. Furniture placement in the lobby and all guest areas will be revised and elevator capacities will be limited to observe safe distancing. Hand sanitisers will be easily available at multiple points and UV-C wands will be used to regularly sterilise seats and tables.

 Food and beverage outlets – All outlets will be rearranged to ensure a safe distance of at least one metre between tables and clusters of bar chairs, with queue management activated during busy meal periods like breakfast.

 Kitchens and food preparation – Implementation of advanced hygiene and safety protocols in all kitchen and food preparation zones with stringent sanitation standards to complement the enhanced safety measures in all F&B outlets

 Spas – Additional temperature readings and hand sanitizing for guests prior to consultation and treatment, with issued masks to be worn by every team member and spa therapist at all times

 Pool and fitness areas – Enhanced sanitation of sun loungers and pool furniture which will be rearranged to ensure safe distancing. In fitness centres, hand and equipment sanitizers will be easily accessible. During high occupancy periods, guests will be invited to reserve a gym session or sunbed space to minimize crowding.

 Team member wellness – Mandatory temperature readings and hand sanitization as team members report for duty, with enhanced grooming and hygiene inspection before the commencement of every shift. Team member locker rooms, dining areas, contact points and heart-of-house corridors and elevators will also be regularly sanitized with safe distancing among colleagues enforced.

 Receiving bays – Enhanced protocols and collaboration with suppliers to ensure maximum hygiene during deliveries, and temperature reading for delivery persons and hygiene screening for vehicles and equipment.
