Minor Hotel Group implementing Green Growth 2050 standards

Anantara wellness balance

MINOR HOTEL GROUP (MHG) has moved to cement itself as one of the global leaders in sustainable tourism by implementing the Green Growth 2050 (GG2050) sustainability solution.

MHG has committed its 35 resorts and hotels under the Anantara brand to the Green Growth 2050 program, launched in 2015, with many already undergoing certification. A further 35 hotels under MHG’s other brands are currently implementing the Performance Measurement solution planned for live operation later in 2016.

“In identifying a sustainability partner for the Hotel Group, Minor was looking for a solution that could take our hotels to the next level and a program with the potential to operate across our entire portfolio”, said John Roberts, MHG director of conservation efforts.

“We found Green Growth 2050 was the only solution that brought together a GSTC recognized Certification Standard, aligned with international conventions, including the UN Global Compact, with true measurement of our sustainability initiatives across over 200 GRI and tourism based metrics,” he added.

Anantara_Layan_BeachVilla_at_Night“The ability to measure and manage performance across all our hotels in the one place, standardizing the group wide recording, was crucial to our decision in moving to Green Growth 2050”.

“MHG has one of the most impressive hotel portfolios in the industry combining luxury properties with outstanding service. It is a privilege to have many of them as our current members,” said Green Growth 2050 CEO Wayne McKinnon.

“When we developed the sustainability framework for GG2050 we wanted to provide a solution designed to take leading organizations like MHG beyond the one-dimensional legacy certification systems currently being used and provide a true cloud-based solution that brought together certification, performance measurement and online learning, overlaid with full business intelligence and analytics.”

“Minor’s sustainability performance can be managed across their entire portfolio and segmented by business type, city, region, brand, or any defined grouping. They can compare the performance of their Asian hotels against their Middle Eastern hotels or owned hotels against managed hotels; certified or not certified, etc. to provide both individual hotel management teams and head office executives with unrivalled granularity in managing their sustainability initiatives.”

“All this information is available in user-defined dynamic dashboards specifically tailored to the needs of each organization, and at the touch of a button. Full reporting and data export is also supported,” said McKinnon.

Green Growth 2050 Chairman, Professor Geoff Lipman, a long-time industry leader and sustainability advocate, praised Minor Hotel Group for its commitment to corporate social responsibility.

“We decided to create Green Growth 2050 to help move traditional environmental indicators for the sector into the mainstream of industry response to climate change and sustainable development.   We spoke to a number of hotel groups – all of whom were positive, but it took the long-term vision of Minor Hotel Group to join us as a launch partner for the program – we are incredibly pleased to be working with them.

“2015 has been a watershed year for the international community with three heads of state summits – on development finance, sustainable development goals and climate change; setting the agenda for a new socio-economic paradigm,” he added.

“The overarching aim is to stabilize climate change by 2050 but the broader goal is a more caring, inclusionary, resource efficient, low carbon society. Green Growth 2050 is a key tool in the armoury of creative and positive change.”

THE TRADITIONAL THAI NEW YEAR is in April, and marked by by its enormously popular Songkran Festival. A distinct part of Songkran is the use of water to wash away misfortunate and to represent a fresh start for the New Year.

The special SPA Cenvaree package for Songkran observes those rituals in a special way.

A perfect start is the spa’s Floral Foot Ritual, where guest’s feet are washed with water infused with Neem Tea, Neem and citrus salt and flower petals.  This ritual helps to wash away any negative energy and calm the mind.

Next, guests have the option between a Siam Body Scrub or Siam Clay Body Wrap.

The Body Scrub, which is gentle in texture, is a combination of tamarind, lemongrass, lime, turmeric powder, yogurt, honey and olive oil. Its exfoliation benefits are powerful and the circular massage assists to improve skin texture and promote healthier, glowing skin.

Its Clay Body Wrap also assists in improving skin with a combination of Thai clay, turmeric, Aloe Vera gel, milk, yogurt, honey and olive oil.  This mixture replenishes moisture in the skin, prevents sun damage and helps to retain skin’s natural glow while brighten and tightening the skin complexion.  After the scrub or mask, guests can rinse off in their private in-room shower.

The fresh ingredients hold more healing and soothing powers than pre-made mixtures as well as allows for our therapists to infuse their nurturing touch for further enhancements.

This special package is finished with a Muscle Melter Massage with Herbal Compress.  This treatment begins with the guest taking three deep breathes of the aromatic scent from the muscle ache relief body oil that helps to begin the relaxation process.  With rosemary, grapefruit, lemon, basil and May Chang the oil helps to engage all senses.

The therapist will then use their elbows and hands to carefully massage sore muscles and help release muscle tension.  Mixed with the massage is the use of the herbal compresses, which are heated to further relax strained and sore muscles.  The herbal compresses are gently rolled back and forth over the skin.

Spa Cenvaree believes in making its guests feel comfortable and nurtured from the reception desk to the final ginger tea after treatment. Its spa therapists communicate with guests throughout the treatment to ensure appropriate pressure during massage, room temperature is suitable as well as heat of the herbal compress is comfortable.

HOW TO: Make a Strawberry Body Scrub

Strawberry 1

WANT TO MAKE EVERY DAY feel more like a SPA day? The experts at  SPA Cenvaree would like to share a great body scrub that help you feel invigorated and that you can do at home.

For the Strawberry Body Scrub you’ll need: Fresh strawberries, brown sugar, medium ground orange peel, instant coffee, olive oil and fresh milk.

How to make the Strawberry Body Scrub:

You’ll need to make strawberry cream first. All you need is five fresh strawberries, 100ml of fresh milk and 20 ml of olive oil.

Put the strawberries, milk and olive oil in a blender and blend until smooth and pour the mixture into a small bowl.

Depending on the quantity of scrub you would like to make, mix the same amount of each – brown sugar, medium ground orange peel and instant coffee – in a bowl.  Once you have completed the strawberry cream and the scrub, you are ready to spa.

Take some of the strawberry cream and gentle rub onto skin where you would like to scrub.  Next, apply some of the scrub mixture on top of the cream.  In a gentle circular motion massage your skin for about five minutes.

For best results, only scrub two to three times a week.  Rubbing in a circular motion gets your blood circulating and also helps to smooth the skin without causing irritation, which can occur from a back and forth motion.

After a scrub, it’s important to moisturize, which will further help to give you smooth, supple and healthy skin.

At SPA Cenvaree, an important part of the experience is creating a cocooning environment. You can create a similar atmosphere at home quite simply. Start by setting the scene. Turn off your phone, dim the lights (better yet, just have candle-light – the flickering flame invokes inner stillness).

Burn some essential oils (black pepper and kaffir lime are personal favourites) and turn on your chosen Enya-inspired CD.

We do not recommend using this body scrub on your face as your face is more sensitive than the skin on your body.

SPA Cenvaree has highly trained, knowledgeable, and nurturing staff that can help you unwind and relieve your body of stress and infuse transformative energy that can promote healing and balance.

Centara has over 35 branches of SPA Cenvaree along with our value brand ‘Cense’ by Spa Cenvaree, where you can go to enjoy the variety of Thai treatments.

SPA Cenvaree adds chocolate and vanilla to its holiday treatments

Chocolate massage at Spa Cenvaree

THIS HOLIDAY SEASON all five senses will be invigorated with the chocolate and vanilla scents that are incorporated into SPA Cenvaree’s special package.

It’s all part of a variety of seasonal treatments that are designed to get you ready for the new year.

The treatments showcase and are inspired by Thailand’s rich cultural heritage and tradition of personal care, in which internationally-experienced spa teams offer a unique blend of Thai therapies and modern knowledge.

The journey begins with a Floral Foot Bath that helps to wash away any negative energy followed by a deliciously-scented Chocolate Body Mousse that helps to gently exfoliate the skin, leaving it soft and smooth.

Chocolate has many wonderful benefits such as it is rich in Vitamins A and E, which help to repair the skin cells and rejuvenate it.  In the Mousse you can also find hints of coconut, lime, and orange along with the aroma of the cocoa.

Those first two treatments are just to get you warmed up for a Vanilla Body Massage.  Rhythmic and soothing massage strokes further promote ultimate relaxation and enable you to release any tension or stress.

The vanilla shea butter and aromatherapy oil help to hydrate the skin while relaxing the sense with the exotic scent of vanilla.  It ends with a gift of the Heavenly Vanilla shea butter and body wash to take home with you.

“When we created our spa package, I wanted our guests to undergo a cocoon-like, nurturing and comforting experience – one where they emerge feeling lighter in being and as though something has shifted on the inside. It also helps that the treatment incorporates the delicious scents of chocolate and vanilla,” said Tara Hanrahan, group director of spa operations for SPA Cenvaree at Centara Hotels & Resorts.

The package will allow you to escape for 90 luxurious minutes, which can be experienced at any of Centara’s SPA Cenvaree locations as well as at Cense by SPA Cenvaree, and is available from December 2015 to January 2016.

For more information, visit Centara’s website or call 66 (0) 2 769 1234.

Anantara’s Elephant Parade coming to Bangkok

Elephant Parade S. Bishop

ANANTARA HOTELS RESORTS & SPAS is partnering with Elephant Parade and top local and international celebrities and artists to bring the world’s largest open air art exhibition, Elephant Parade, to Bangkok.

The exhibition will see a herd of almost 100, 1.5 metre brightly coloured elephants, which have been specially decorated and hand painted and will be exhibited as a herd in key locations throughout Bangkok, starting Dec. 1, 2015 and ending on Jan. 29, 2016.

The first major Elephant Parade was held in Rotterdam in the Netherlands in 2007 and has since been exhibited in cities across the world including London, Singapore, Amsterdam, Milan and Hong Kong.

Elephant Parade Bangkok will be a first for Thailand and the only one for the city.

The event was originally created after founder Marc Spits and his son Mike visited the Friends of the Asian Elephant hospital in Lampang, Thailand, which treats sick and injured elephants. There they saw Mosha, a baby elephant who lost her leg after stepping on a landmine when only seven months old and was the first elephant to receive a prosthetic limb. She is fitted with a new leg every year, and each time must learn to walk all over again.

Mosha features in each Elephant Parade exhibition and will have a specially Thai-themed painted prosthetic leg for the Bangkok Parade.

Artists from all walks of life have been busy designing their elephants, each an original piece of art to help paint a brighter future for Thailand’s national animal.

Famous supporters of Elephant Parade Bangkok include: Hangover 2 star Nirut Sirichanya; Furious 7 star Tony Jaa; Designer Paul Smith; World Number One DJ, Hardwell; Miss Thailand World, Sirinya Bishop; Artists Elizabeth Romhild, Elsie Evans and Nancy Chandler, Sculptor Gavin Fifield and a wide range of Thai celebrities and artists.

Anantara Elephant Parade 2“In my life I have spent a lot of quality time with elephants. I grew up in a mahout family and started my movie career with an elephant as a co-star,” said Furious 7 star and Elephant Parade Ambassador Tony Jaa.

“I want to thank all the people and organizations who take the time and resources to ensure the safety of these intelligent creatures in Thailand and around the world.”

In February 2016 a selection of elephants from the parade will be auctioned off at a charity gala dinner at Anantara Siam Bangkok, with the proceeds going to the Golden Triangle Asian Elephant Foundation, which, in turn, will select and fund a range of sustainable programs that benefit the elephants of Thailand, including Wildlife Alliance, Freeland, WildAid, Think Elephants and Thai Elephant Therapy Project.

The Golden Triangle Asian Elephant Foundation (GTAEF) was set up in 2006 to improve the plight of Thailand’s elephants, and has since been diversified to include welfare projects that incorporate broader philanthropic and cultural objectives with unprecedented success.

“As a company, we are always looking for like-minded partners who share our true passion in saving the Asian elephant and Elephant Parade has long been known for its elephant conservation efforts in Thailand, which is why we feel this partnership is the ideal fit,” said William E. Heinecke, Chairman and CEO of Minor International, the parent company of Anantara Hotels Resorts & Spas.

“The more awareness that is raised on the plight of domestic and wild elephants in Thailand the better the chances we have for their survival. I can’t think of a better way to raise awareness than bringing the largest open air art exhibition in support of Asian Elephants to Bangkok in 2015.”

“Elephant Parade is very proud and excited to team up with such a great company as Anantara and The Golden Triangle Asian Elephant Foundation. We share the same commitment and values in helping save the Asian elephant, ultimately from extinction.

“We’ve travelled all over the world with Elephant Parade and now it feels like we are coming home, with our upcoming event in Bangkok. I am sure this exposition will be our most exciting and colourful one to date,” Mike Spits, Elephant Parade founder.
