Six Senses Samui Invites Helping Hands

New GM at Centara’s first COSI Hotel at Samui

VATMONGKOL RASISAWAS has been appointed general manager of Centara’s innovative new COSI hotel on Thailand’s Samui island.

Ms. Vatmongkol will take over responsibility for the first hotel of Centara’s new COSI brand, launched by Centara last December to serve a new generation of independent travellers. The hotel is located on Samui’s popular Chaweng beach.

Ms. Vatmongkol brings 15 years of experience and knowledge working for leading five- star hotels in Bangkok and in Pattaya to Centara’s first COSI brand hotel. She is familiar with Centara, having previously worked at their flag-ship Centara Grand & Bangkok Convention Centre at CentralWorld.

Before rejoining Centara, she was General Manager at Sovereign Group Hotel in Bangkok. She holds a Master’s degree in Hospitality Management from the University of Derby in the UK and the Swiss Hotel Management School in Switzerland.

Anantara expanding its global ban of plastic straws

ANANTARA HOTELS & RESORTS will roll out a global ban on the use of single-use plastic straws at every property worldwide by Oct. 1, 2018.

Since January of this year, when Anantara was the first major hotel brand to announce its decision to eradicate plastic straws at every single property across the Asia region, Anantara has been working hard to roll out the ban to properties in Australasia, Europe and the Middle East.

“Following the immense success of the first phase of the plastic straw ban at all Anantara properties in Asia, we are thrilled to announce the implementation of this policy worldwide,” said John Roberts, group director of sustainability and conservation for Anantara.

“Each single-use plastic straw takes hundreds of years to break down and scientists predict there may soon be more straws than fish in the oceans by 2050. Anantara guests are forward thinking and sustainably minded and want to continue to enjoy the beautifully lush surroundings for which Anantara is famous for generations to come.”

The decision to ban plastic straws is just one more step in Anantara’s ongoing journey as a leading luxury sustainable tourism brand.

In April of this year, Anantara took the decision to replace the packaging of all dry amenities with compostable paper and plastic toothbrushes have been replaced with a biodegradable straw alternative.

For years, locally sourced toiletries such as shampoo, have been provided in larger ceramic pumps to reduce the amount of packaging and waste created by individual mini servings. This alone prevents an estimated 4.16 million plastic bottles from ending up in landfills around the world annually.

Plastic water bottles are the next ubiquitous item earmarked for total abolition across the Anantara portfolio. All plastic water bottles will be banned from rooms and gyms to be replaced with recyclable glass or refillable alternatives as a brand standard by the end of 2018.

Until then, guests will increasingly notice an absence of plastic from all outlets and facilities in the Anantara Hotels, Resorts & Spas they frequent. The sumptuous restaurants for which Anantara is renowned will soon be managed without any plastic front of house; from the condiments on tables to the wicker baskets housing the freshly baked pastries at breakfast.

Even around the grounds guests will notice that team members use bamboo baskets to collect compostable gardening trimmings instead of plastic sacks.

As a leading experiential luxury brand, guests are offered the chance to positively give back to the community framework of the destination they visit. Whether it be releasing rescued turtles at Anantara Mai Khao Phuket, planting restored coral at the nurseries off of Anantara Dhigu Villas in the Maldives or working with local AIDs survivors to generate sustainable income by providing Anantara Royal Livingstone with locally farmed mushrooms.

Since 2014, Anantara guests have been invited through the Dollars for Deeds Program to donate 1 dollar for every night of their stay, which Anantara then matches. Six Senses serves up sustainable food and water


The culinary and spa teams grow it, forage for it, source it, prepare it, cook it up, and blend it into spa treatments and therapies.

It has a direct bearing on guest health, vitality and happiness – and that of the world around them – which is why Six Senses ensures all produce is local, seasonable and sustainable where possible.

The group’s philosophy on food and drink starts with choosing natural ingredients, and a cleaner and simpler approach to preparation, focusing on quality, balance and fresh whole food made from scratch.

Herbs, fruit, veggies and mushrooms are grown in the organic gardens on site. Fresh eggs and milk are also supplied by resident chickens, goats … and even camels.

Six Senses adheres to the highest ethical standards on caring for livestock, follows a “no-take” list of at-risk seafood species, and is committed to local and seasonal sourcing of produce.

All its properties are building close relationships with local farmers and suppliers, who share the same commitment to responsible sourcing and seasonality. Several properties are also active in local farmers’ markets. Six Senses Samui even plays host to their own for the local community and guests several times throughout the year.

Knowing that one- third of the food we consume requires pollination by bees, honey bee farms are maintained onsite to support healthy ecosystems and provide fresh honey.

The attitude is also about less is more, with chefs cooking up feasts while avoiding additives, preservatives, artificial colors and flavors or GMO foods.

Plastic bottles are out. Instead, each property treats, purifies, mineralizes and bottles its own still and sparkling drinking water in reusable glass bottles on site. Six Senses water is provided on a complimentary basis in all guest accommodations.

Chilled water, sparkling and still, is served in restaurants at a cost that is significantly less than imported bottled water, with 50 per cent of all sales contributing to the Sustainability Fund. The money is earmarked for use in local community projects.

“We surveyed many guests across all of our properties and held blind taste tastings of Six Senses water,” said the group’s Vice-President of Sustainability Jeffery Smith.

“Many people were not able to distinguish between branded water and Six Senses water. And once the environmental implication was made clear, the overwhelming consensus was one of full support for the initiative.”

Guests taking advantage of one of the many wellness programs at Six Senses will also be fully supported by the culinary teams, who can adapt meal plans to individual needs. For example, the Trim & Fit program reduces fat mass through a balance of quality protein, resistant starches and healthy ketogenic fats, while limiting carbohydrates (glucose).

And the Holistic Anti-Ageing Centre, which launched in May at Six Senses Kaplankaya in Turkey, is based on an anti-inflammatory approach, using fresh, mineral rich foods that are abundant in antioxidants to fight free radical damage to skin, hair and nails.

Due to its popularity, the Holistic Anti-Ageing Centre concept will be launched at sister properties in 2019.

To drink to guests’ health, many spas incorporate a juice bar serving up house-made probiotics and “living” tonics. These blend up native plants that contain health-giving properties to aid digestion, reduce inflammation and keep the body’s immune system strong.

An enticing juice and smoothie menu that features local ingredients is also available across the group and complements the personalized wellness programs.

Wellness experts share nutritional advice during personal consultations, while cooking classes and the Alchemy Bar workshops teach guests how to use local ingredients and produce in nutritious meal or in homemade hair, body or face masks and scrubs.
