New Thai Spa Excellence Standard Launched

THE THAI SPA ASSOCIATION has teamed up with SGS, the world’s leading inspection, verification, testing and certification company, to establish a voluntary Thai Spa Excellence Quality Standard.

In announcing the new standard, Andrew Jacka, president of the Thai Spa Association, noted that it would help Thai spa operators define and monitor the quality and safety of their operations.

“As the ASEAN Economic Community 2015 deadline draws ever closer, the Thai Spa Association is exploring all options to ensure that the Thai Spa industry continues to maintain its market position and cultural integrity.”

He said he has “high expectations as the new standard is rolled out to the entire Thai spa community” and paid special tribute to the association’s standards and practices committee, under the chairmanship of Sunai Vachiraswarakarn, and its work with SGS in the development of the new standard.

The standard is based on five key elements – facilities and infrastructure and spa operational control that includes licensing and hygiene, sanitation and cleanliness, personnel and monitoring, and improvement.

As an independent audit company, SGS is recognized as the global benchmark for quality and integrity. It has more than 67,000 employees and operates a network of some 1,250 offices and laboratories around the world.

In this assignment, its mandate was to develop standards that will protect the reputation of Thai spas and leverage Thai spa potential for continuous improvement, including internal cost controls by providing key stakeholder endorsement of best spa practices.

Bangkok Four Seasons spa offering Winter Spirit package

Thai hotels/resorts/spas win big in NAPA Awards

THAI HOTEL/RESORTS AND SPAS walked away with more than 60 Hospitality Asia Platinum Awards for 2011-2013, including three which make the Best 10 HAPA Hotel of the Year listFour Points by Sheraton Bangkok, Pathumwan Princess Bangkok and Tower Club at Lebua Bangkok.

Four Thai resorts – Anantara Phuket Villas, Anantara Golden Triangle Chiang Rai, Dewa Phuket and KC Resort and Over Water Villas Koh Samui – placed in the HAPA Best 10 Resort of the Year list.

Six Senses Yao Noi named best international destination spa

SIX SENSES BEYOND PHUKET has been named best international destination spa by international readers of SPA Traveller.

This is the first year for The SPA Traveller Awards. Online voting took place a six-month period, during which readers were asked to nominate their favourite spa, treatment, therapist and cuisine.

Six Senses launches Reforestation Project in Chiang Mai area

SIX SENSES Resorts & Spas, a leader in sustainable tourism, is launching one of its largest reforestation projects in the Chiang Mai area as part of its commitment to the fight against climate change.

It has partnered with the PATT Foundation to plant more than 200,000 trees a year in the Chiang Mai region in Northern Thailand. The project represents a multi-million dollar commitment by Six Senses over the next decade and beyond.

The project will help balance an estimated 160,000 tons of carbon dioxide a year by replanting 200 acres of forest every 12 months. Between 20 and 30 different species will be planted. The program follows The Framework Species Method of Forest Restoration, based on the idea that birds and mammals, attracted to the reforested area, will bring with them the seeds of other tree species.

The beginning of the project coincides with the UN International Year of the Forest.

Sonu Shivdasani, Six Senses’ chairman and CEO, noted that deforestation is still one of the main causes of climate change and that “the International Year of the Forest couldn’t have come at a more important time.

“Six Senses’ support for the Chiang Mai reforestation project underlines our commitment to becoming a decarbonising company by 2020.”

Rainforests act as a giant sink by sequestering vast quantities of carbon. About 15.5 million hectares (38 million acres) of rainforests are cut down every year.

Six Senses is working with local communities in Chiang Mai and hopes their input will play a vital role in the long-term success of the project and that the region will become a vital sanctuary for endangered species across Southeast Asia.

Dusit D2 Chiang Mai restaurant selected by Tatler again

MOXIE restaurant at Dusit D2 Chiang Mai has been named one of Thailand’s best restaurants 2011 by Thailand Tatler magazine, a leading English language lifestyle publication.

This is Moxie’s fourth year in the Tatler’s dining guide, which reviews only the best dining venues, as selected by its readers. Moxie was one of 14 Chiang Mai restaurants designed as the region’s best.

The guide recommends the restaurant’s signature dishes, including spaghetti with Chiang Mai sausage, baked baby pork ribs and escabeche of shrimp tails. Moxie also started serving world-class organic coffee from nearby Doi Chiang  inNorthern Thailand. New GM for Hua Hin’s Hôtel de la Paix Cha Am Beach in Hua Hin

Nigel Tovey, a well known figure in the Thai hospitality industry, has been appointed general manager of KS Resorts’ Hôtel de la Paix Cha Am Beach in Hua Hin.

Nigel holds a degree in hospitality management and started his career as a district catering manager in the U.K.before moving into the human resources field after identifying a training gap in the catering industry. He was awarded a Fellowship to the Hotel Catering and Institutional Management Association in the U.K. for his work.

During his 30 years in the industry, at least 20 of them were spent in developing the Asian market for some of the big names in the multi-national hotel industry. He comes to KS Resorts from Akaryn Hospitality Management, which includes two Aleenta resorts, where he was director of operations. He is also well known for his tenure at Koh Samui’s Baan Taling Ngam Resort and Le Meridien Khao Lak.

Nigel is a former president of SKAL Samui and an active member of the Thai Hotels Association.
